The main types of support to understand

There is not one universal solar grant that pays for every homeowner's installation. Support tends to sit in categories: VAT treatment, supplier or local authority schemes for eligible households, export tariff income and occasional regional programmes.

The important question is not whether an advert says solar is funded. It is whether you personally qualify, whether the installer is approved for that route, and whether the scheme covers panels, batteries or wider energy-efficiency work.

• Check Ofgem for supplier obligation context where relevant.
• Check local authority pages for area-specific schemes.
• Ask installers to put eligibility assumptions in writing.

Smart Export Guarantee is not a grant

The Smart Export Guarantee pays eligible generators for electricity exported to the grid. It can improve the economics of solar, but it is income after installation rather than upfront grant funding.

Export rates vary by supplier and tariff. For many homes, the bigger saving still comes from using generated electricity on site instead of buying it from the grid.

Watch for overconfident grant claims

Be wary of pages that suggest every homeowner can get free solar panels with no meaningful eligibility test. Some schemes are targeted at households on certain benefits, low incomes, inefficient homes or specific local authority areas.

A credible quote process should explain what is available, what is not available, and what evidence is needed. If the grant story keeps changing during the sales call, slow down.
